March, 2000

Dear Readers:

The last two weeks in February found me tracking down homeless people for The New York Times.

They're doing a national story on how poor people view the rich, and vice versa. In December a photographer came here from New York City and shot some great photos, but without any names. So, they asked me to find some of the people he photographed and interview them. I found three. It meant going out several times to a homeless camp and also showing the photos in the soup lines. I was able to get the name of a woman featured with her two young girls. Then Catholic Services gave me her address and the name of a fast-food restaurant she worked at. I went to her "home" -- a rundown trailer park next to the Salvation Army and across the street from a recycling center. Two weeks earlier she was evicted for not paying her rent. Before that, she lost her job. I tried the women's shelter and they told me she voluntarily turned over her kids to the county a couple of weeks earlier. It was an incredibly sad story. I was glad to put that assignment behind me.

The manuscript for The Murder of Biggie Smalls is finally finished. Once I mail it off, I can move onto the Murder in the Desert manuscript about Ted Binion's death. The trial begins March 13, unless there's a last-minute delay. Also, I'm nearly finished editing my father's memoir about growing up in the hills of Missouri. It's quite good with lots of description -- very Huck Finnish. It's set to be published later this year by 1stBooks. We'll be adding his book to my site.

Besides writing and editing manuscripts, APBNews.com has been keeping me busy, helping me keep my finger on the crime pulse in the Las Vegas valley. I also write club and band reviews for AOL's Digital City Las Vegas.

Thanks for dropping by my site.

Best,
