April 2000 Dear Readers,
This month found me in and out of town quite a bit, including a trip to Laughlin, Nevada, with some travel writers, and in and out of court with the Ted Binion murder trial.
It’s turning out to be quite a case. Dr. Michael Baden, a New York state forensics medical examiner who testified for the defense in the O.J. Simpson trial, testified this time for the prosecution in the Binion case. The defense attempted to discredit the famous doctor by pointing out to the jury that Baden came up with his conclusions about the case based on photos and interviews. Baden disagrees with the Clark County chief medical examiner in Binion’s cause of death. The medical examiner, who actually performed the Binion autopsy, determined that Binion died from a drug overdose; Baden, a paid expert witness, claims he died from suffocation. Sandy Murphy and Rick Tabish are accused of forcing Binion to swallow the drugs. One juror was dismissed for gossiping about the case at a nail salon and telling patrons it was boring. I’ve been there throughout the proceedings and it’s anything but boring! The trial is expected to end around the end of May or early June. Stay tuned. Or check out my stories covering the case for APBNews.com (posted on this site or at www.apbnews.com).
My editor at St. Martin’s Press tells me that The Murder of Biggie Smalls is in production, which is great news. That means it’s right on schedule for a fall release. We’ll probably see some pre-publicity on the book in the next couple of months.
Thanks again for visiting my site.
Best,
