May  2000

Dear Readers,

It's been an incredibly busy past few weeks. I was in and out (mostly in) of the courtroom for millionaire Ted Binion's murder trial -- for seven solid weeks. The verdicts for Sandra Murphy and Rick Tabish came in on May 19, guilty of a total of 17 counts, including first-degree murder. There was so much shock in the courtroom when the verdicts were read, it was like the air had been sucked out of the room. It was audible silence. The jury was incredibly emotional. Now we'll see what kind of sentences they hand down. I'm betting that, even though the jury threw the book at them on the verdicts, they'll will be more lenient when they decide on the penalties.

Now that the trial is over, I'll be able to devote more time to the book about the case. I hope to have it finished in about three months, then off to the publisher.

Also this month, I worked a day for the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) on a Mike Tyson story involving a topless dancer who accused the boxer of hitting her. A film crew asked me to set up interviews for them in advance, so I did. The story for them is that Tyson has applied for a boxing license in England, so the Brits are interested. The gist of the saga, however, is that eight police units showed up at the topless club, as did detectives and Tyson's attorney. Police interviewed people for hours and determined that no crime had been committed. And, believe me, if they thought Tyson had committed a crime, they would have arrested him that night. The day after the incident, the stripper went down to police headquarters and filed a citizen complaint. By law, police have to reinvestigate the case.

I've also read the edited version of the Biggie Smalls manuscript, made some of recent interviews and shipped it off to New York. It's still on schedule for a fall release.

I was interviewed this month by XX Rap magazine  (the title says it all, but it's a national music magazine) for an upcoming Q&A piece about both the Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls murders.

Keep those emails coming!

All my best,
